VANCOUVER, BC – From February 8 to 16, 2025, Vancouver and Whistler welcomed athletes and spectators from around the world for the Invictus Games—a prestigious international sporting event honouring wounded, injured, and sick service members and veterans. This marked the first winter edition of the Games, featuring a mix of traditional and winter sports, and only the second time Canada has had the honour of hosting.

David Eng, a valued member of our network and agent with Sutton WestCoast Realty, recently volunteered at the 2025 Vancouver Invictus Games and shared his unique experience with us.

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, provide a platform for adaptive sports competition, empowering military personnel and veterans to reclaim their physical and mental well-being through sportsmanship and camaraderie. The 2025 Games in Vancouver and Whistler marked the first winter edition, featuring events such as wheelchair curling, alpine skiing, and sledge hockey, in addition to traditional competitions like swimming and indoor rowing. This was only the second time Canada has hosted the Games, making it a unique opportunity for David to contribute to such a meaningful event.

David, who has always been passionate about giving back, was drawn to the Games because of his deep respect for those who have served their countries. He had to undergo an interview and pass a criminal record check to be selected as a volunteer—an experience that reaffirmed his commitment to making a positive difference. His role at the Volunteer Center involved ensuring that fellow volunteers were well-supported, adjusting their shifts, making sure they were fed, and helping them take necessary breaks. With nearly 2,000 volunteers from across Canada and beyond, it was a large-scale operation that required teamwork and dedication.

Throughout the event, David had the chance to meet people from across the country and learn more about the experiences of military veterans. He was especially moved by the inclusivity of the Games, noting that not all disabilities were visible and that representation in sport was crucial.

He saw firsthand how athletes with artificial limbs and wheelchairs performed at an incredibly high level, particularly in swimming, a sport that holds personal significance for him. As a former stroke and turn judge in competitive swimming—his son being a competitive swimmer—David was already familiar with the poolside environment. However, witnessing athletes remove prosthetic limbs before diving into the water was a humbling and eye-opening experience. "It was amazing to see their strength and perseverance," he shared. "Their performance in the pool was nothing short of inspiring."

Another highlight for David was contributing to a cause founded by Prince Harry, the founder of the Invictus Games.

"It’s incredible how one person can use their resources to bring people together in such a positive way," he said. "And he’s been doing it for years. When the Games came to Vancouver, I knew I had to be part of it."

For David, the event was not just about medals but about showcasing the capabilities of veterans and active service members in competitive sports. "It was important for me to contribute in any way I could, knowing that these individuals have already given so much in service to our countries."

David’s commitment to volunteerism also extends to the BMO Marathon, where he has been a longstanding volunteer; you can find David at this year’s BMO Marathon event in May. David’s commitment to volunteerism reflects Sutton’s values of community and service. Whether he’s helping his clients find their perfect home or supporting a global event like the Invictus Games, David’s dedication shines through.

We are proud to have agents like David who embody the spirit of giving and making a difference beyond the real estate industry. Thank you, David, for your outstanding contribution to the 2025 Vancouver Invictus Games and for exemplifying the Sutton Spirit!
